air conditioner 12000 btuConsidered an icon of luxury a few decades back, Air Conditioners (abbreviated to AC) are now a basic necessity of almost every household. The growing use of ACs can be primarily attributed to the rise in global warming on earth. Technically put, air conditioner is an electronic appliance to control the temperature by dropping the humidity. The functioning of an AC is very similar to that of a refrigerator. It pulls out the heat from an area using a refrigeration cycle to keep the environment cool and fresh.

best air conditionerMost of the air conditioners work almost in the same way irrespective of their shape and size. The most popular among the air conditioners available in the market is referred to as a split system air conditioner. In this kind of air conditioners the compressor is installed inside the home where as the condenser remains outside and they are connected by means of refrigerant pipes. The noise produced in case of split air conditioners is very less as compared to its other competitor. The wall mounted split air conditioner has a rotary compressor, which forces cold air into the room.

Facts you should know about split ACs:

The tonnage of the air conditioner determines its cooling capacity. It depends on the size or area of the room you need to use it in. Spilt ACs are available in 0.50 ton, 0.75 ton, 1 ton, 1.5 ton and 2 tons. If you go for a lower tonnage AC to reduce its cost, then it troubles you with more power consumption that is not favorable in the long run.

BTU or British thermal unit per hour is the unit for standard measurement of the cooling capacity of an air conditioner. Hence, the strength of the AC largely depends on the cooling capacity. As a matter of fact, the cooling capacity of an AC of one ton can be 12000 BTU per hour.

There are some home truths about Split Air Conditioners that buyers must be aware of:

air conditioner sizingSize Does Matter – It is easy go get confused regarding the various sizes of split air conditioners that is dependent on the size of your room. For instance, a 35 sq. ft. area will need 0.75-ton air conditioner whereas a 2-ton AC will suit well for a room having an area of 250 sq. ft. if you want to cool a large hall, you can divide it into small rooms to calculate the accurate tonnage it will need.

Hole in The Wall – For installing a split AC in your room, like or not, you might need to make a hole on you wall. The depth of the hole depends on the unit you have decided to buy. Usually, it is 3 inches in diameter.

Tubing – A split AC requires an additional component such as Tubing to function properly. So you need to purchase it additionally from the market. It usually acts as a connecter between indoor and outdoor units. Generally, the size of the tubing depends on the distance between the indoor unit and the outdoor unit.

Dual Zone and Triple Zone- If you think simply buying a split AC will solve all your purpose, think again. If you live in a house that consists of multiple rooms, then you must go for Dual Zone or Triple Zone depending on the number of rooms in your house. Basically, it means the number of air handles required to cool a room. If your house is like an open area that has multiple rooms in it, then you may need to go for one air handler; however, you need to ensure that BTUs are adequate to cover the area of all rooms.

Installation Cost -When you consider installing a split AC in your house, make it a point to include the cost of installation as well. Installing a mini AC or split air conditioner is considered more complex than installing a window AC. As a result, you will need the help of a professional who is familiar with the installation process of the split AC.

Selecting a split air conditioner can be extremely taxing given the number of brands available in the market. Starting from LG, Voltas, Whirlpool, Samsung to Cruise, there area wide range of brands with different models and features can be found in many online stores. However, there is something that you should always remember as a prudent buyer of a split AC, if you stick to a less known brand just to save a few bucks, it might cost you more in the long run in terms of poor quality and durability.

On the top of it, some cheap split air conditioners tend to consume more electricity resulting higher electricity bills. Hence, it makes perfect sense to go for a well-know brand over their cheaper alternatives.

Portable Air Conditioning Unit Venting FAQ

Portable Air Conditioner Unit Venting FAQ

Read on to understanding the venting requirements of a portable air conditioner.

Portable Air Conditioner Unit Venting FAQ

Potable air conditioners are units that can be transferred from one room to another. The advantage that they have over the traditional air conditioning units is that they do not require any permanent installation. However, what they do require is a venting outlet, which can either be a window or a wall. Once the portable air conditioner unit is positioned, the exhaust hose has to set out of the room so that the hot air can be let out.

Below are the frequently asked questions (FAQ) regarding the portable air conditioning unit venting:

Do portable air conditioners require outside venting?
All portable air conditioners need to vent the hot air they remove from the room. However, the hot air need not be vented outside a window. It can be vented into a room, like storage where the high temperature is not an issue.

Can I use a portable air conditioner without a vent?
Portable air conditioners require a vent to function properly. If the hot air is not vented out to another room, then the air conditioner will not work efficiently.

What type of venting options do Portable Air Conditioners provide?
Most portable air conditioners come with an installation kit for a window or a sliding door. A wall or a drop ceiling can also be used for venting of portable air conditioner unit.

What are the steps involved to vent a portable air conditioner?
The typical steps involved are:

  • Select the location for vent.
  • Slide the exhaust connector over the discharge opening at the back of the unit.
  • Connect the exhaust hose to the exhaust connector.
  • Connect the venting window kit adapter to the window kit.

Set the window vending kit into the window and shut the window.

How does the window kit work?
The window kit is cut to a slider or a window. The window is then closed against the foam to seal the air from outside. The exhaust hose if fitted through a small cut out in the foam.

How long does the installation take at a window?
A single installation takes about 5 minutes and the unit can easily be moved from window to window.

What is the ideal length of the exhaust hose?
The ideal length of the exhaust hose should be between 5 and 7 feet and it should be 5 inch in diameter.

Can I extend the length of the exhaust hose?
The manufacturers of the portable air conditioners generally recommend that the length of the hose should not be extended. If there is a backpressure or constriction to the airflow, the unit will not work and could also be damaged. If you are left with little choice, then make sure that while increasing the length of the hose, the diameter is also increased. Doing so will definitely decrease the efficiency of the air conditioning unit. However, read your warranty manual before doing so, as some manufactures do not allow it all.

What material is used to make the exhaust hose of a portable air conditioner?
The material used to make the hose is temperature resistant plastic, which is reinforced with metal.

Can I vent a portable air conditioner out a dryer vent?
Venting a portable air conditioner using a dryer vent is usually not recommended by the manufactures, especially if the diameter of the dryer vent is smaller than the hose of the air conditioner. Also, if your dryer vent has external vents, then it should not be used at all as the compressor is not strong enough to push these flaps open.

What is the difference between a single hose design and a dual hose design?
Some portable air conditioners offer one air exhaust hose while some offer two, one for air intake and the other one for air exhaust. A single hose takes the air in, cools it and returns the same air back into the room. A small portion of this air will be blown out of the air conditioner’s exhaust host. A dual hose unit works by taking in air from the outside though one of the hose pipes cooling the air and releasing it while releasing the hot air through the exhaust pipe. As of now, there is no conclusive proof as to which unit produces more efficient cooling and conserves energy at the same time.

In conclusion, please read the user manual very carefully before installing a venting mechanism for your portable air conditioner. Happy Cooling!
